چکیده

bstract—Simple and complex cells are two basic and inct functional types of neurons in the mammalian prim isual cortex. Here, we studied the onset response and ffset response of simple and complex cells to a flas isual stimulus in the cat’s area 17. Compared with si ells, complex cells exhibited greater similarity between nset and offset responses in peak latency. For simple c nset response had greater peak amplitude and signa oise ratio than offset response, and for complex cells, ersa. For both types of cortical cells, the amplitude of esponses increased with stimulus duration within 100 ignificantly, while the onset response did not. However licit a detectable offset response, complex cells tended equire shorter stimulus duration than simple cells did egard to the similarity of psychophysical data, these res uggest that the rebound offset response of cortical cel isappearance of a visual pattern might be correlated isual persistence in humans. © 2008 IBRO. Complex cell receptive fields: evidence for a hierarchical mechanism.

Simple cells in the primary visual cortex have segregated ON and OFF subregions in their receptive fields, while complex cells have overlapping ON and OFF subregions. These two cell types form the extremes at each end of a continuum of receptive field types. Hubel and Wiesel in 1962 suggested a hierarchical scheme of processing whereby spatially offset simple cells drive complex cells. Simple a...

On the division of cortical cells into simple and complex types: a comparative viewpoint.

Hubel and Weisel introduced the concept of cells in cat primary visual cortex being partitioned into two categories: simple and complex. Subsequent authors have developed a quantitative measure to distinguish the two cell types based on the ratio between modulated responses at the stimulus frequency (F1) and unmodulated (F0) components of the spiking responses to drifting sinusoidal gratings. I...

The effect of ibotonic acid lesion of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) on the response of cortical neurons in the rat barrel cortex

In the present study, the effect of NBM lesion on the temporal characteristics of response integration evoked by multiple whisker stimulations in the barrel cortex of rats was studied. Nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) projects to widespread areas of the cortex and provides the major cholinergic input (80%) to the cerebral cortex. In this study we examined the effects of NBM lesion on the respon...

THE EFFECT OF POSTERIOR CEREBRAL PULMONARY DIRECT ELECTRICAL STIMULATION (TDCS) ON IMPROVING SPATIAL, VISUAL, AND VERBAL PERCEPTUAL ABILITIES

Background & Aims: Direct electrical stimulation of the brain is a therapeutic technique that can be effective in improving visual, verbal, and spatial perception. The present study investigated the effect of direct electrical stimulation (tDCS) of the posterior parietal cortex on improving spatial, visual, and verbal perceptual abilities. Materials & Methods: In this quasi-experimental study,...
